Education and community outreach

Over the past six months the Norfolk and Norwich Festival, Creative Partnerships, Pro Train and ten schools from Great Yarmouth and Gorleston have worked together on a large-scale cross curricular project. The ten schools have worked with artists, engineers and Sarruga (the Spanish carnival-arts company who are performing in this year’s Festival) to create a set of large-scale fish structures. These will now be pulled together into a show to be performed by professional performers and schoolchildren, directed by Festival Director Jonathan Holloway, able assisted by the 100 pupils who have designed and built the structures. The performance will take place in Gorleston in April, and is the curtain-raiser for the Festival on 3rd May in Norwich.

From autumn 2006 the Norfolk & Norwich Festival will be active in the community all year round. Soon, we will be working on the following strands:

  • The Children’s International Festival (October 2007 onwards). As with the May Festival, our new Festival for children will invite the world’s best artists to Norwich.
  • Creative Partnerships. This major government initiative in schools in Great Yarmouth and Gorleston will be managed by the Norfolk & Norwich Festival from June 2006 – 2008.
  • Education and community outreach programme, using the arts to stimulate learning and social inclusion in communities across Norfolk.
