This year the festival will begin and end with a bang! On 3 May, the launch event will take place at Millennium Plain between 4.30pm and 10.00pm, and it’s free and unticketed. There will be a carnival performance of giant, animated sea creatures (Marine Machines – made by children from 10 schools in Great Yarmouth), an artistic hairdressing show with its own DJ soundtrack, a spiralling ‘helionaut’ who will explore the city’s airspace while suspended from a helium balloon and, finally, another free show, this time with spectacular insects and mythical creatures made by Sarruga, the Barcelona-based carnival arts company.
On the last day of the festival, the Family Day event will turn St George’s Street into
a four-hour carnival, featuring the Norwich Samba Band, a perplexed street clown called Leandre, a dancer who wants to sit on a bench that won’t stay still, a pair of gigantic slinkies whose antics will captivate young and old, the Urban Strawberry Lunch drumming group, the Theatre of Adventure jazz troupe, and the Friend Ship (direct from Liverpool, European Capital of Culture 2008). And for the musical at heart, Britten Sinfonia will lead free taster workshops for youngsters, regardless of experience. Like the launch, Family Day is free and unticketed.
